Organisers announced the second year of San Diego Comic-Con Malaga during a special presentation at Casa del Lector in Matadero arts centre Madrid.
Fernando Piquer, appointed as new director, admitted shortcomings in previous management and emphasised changes to improve visitor satisfaction. Accusations of overcrowding, ticketing problems, overcharging, massive queues – few guessed the event would be as popular a draw as it turned out to be.
Big venue upgrades target crowding problems
The second edition of the grand pop art event will be October 1 to 4. Expansion plans centre on the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos, increasing exhibition space notably to nearly 19,600 square metres from last year’s 10,800. Addition of an exterior pavilion contributes 8,800 square metres to this growth. Consequently exhibitor stands double in quantity across the site.
Gaming areas receive a major boost, moving to over 2,000 square metres indoors, while role-play zones spread into dedicated larger sections in two halls. These modifications distribute activities throughout the entire venue and facilitate easier public participation.
Fan-focused features return with improvements
Artists’ Alley gains an independent outdoor setup within the Village area. Meet the Artist opportunities continue, allowing personal encounters with global celebrities from cinema, comics and art.
Presale priority rewards loyal fans
Sales of tickets begin sometime after Easter, with an exclusive early window reserved solely for participants from the 2025 edition. Organisers will limit total attendance to approximately 95,000 people, matching last year’s turnout for better control. Piquer stressed this measure as recognition of the confidence shown by 2025 participants.
Economic and cultural impact stressed by leaders
Support comes from the Junta de Andalucia and Malaga Council, together with principal sponsor BBVA. Arturo Bernal, regional tourism councillor, made a point of mentioning substantial employment generation and direct business benefits for the city. Media coverage alone reached an estimated value above €66 million according to official figures. David Glanzer, representing the original San Diego Comic-Con, reinforced ongoing partnership via video link.
Future commitment secures Malaga’s role
These upgrades hope to put Malaga firmly on the map as Europe’s pop culture destination.
Event organisers confirm the gathering remains in the city through 2027 before any contract review takes place. Piquer described the initiative as a new phase focused on fans and international appeal.
