Andalucia has pioneered a major digital leap in public health services. From March 26, residents can access the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS) through a new virtual health card stored on their smartphones. Health Councillor Antonio Sanz unveiled this advancement in Seville, making this a major step towards modernised care.

People can use a highly secure dynamic QR code to identify themselves at health centres or pharmacies or when collecting prescriptions. This functionality integrates seamlessly with the Carpeta Ciudadana platform and popular apps Salud Andalucía and ClicSalud+. Patients manage appointments, retrieve medications and handle other tasks directly from their mobiles, eliminating the need to carry the physical version.

Parents conveniently store their children’s health cards on personal devices to streamline family healthcare organisation. Authorities will be able to confirm the traditional plastic card stays fully valid, making sure of compatibility and ease of use for everyone.

The health centre enters the 21st century

This initiative forms part of the SAS’s comprehensive digital overhaul, collaborating with the Agencia Digital de Andalucia. Efforts focus on cutting bureaucratic hurdles and delivering faster, more user-friendly access to services. Platforms merge into a unified digital ecosystem while administrative processes automate wherever possible. Patient communication evolves with WhatsApp notifications replacing conventional SMS for appointment reminders and health alerts.

Innovative features increase efficiency

New tools will address common challenges effectively. The Virtual Waiting Room prevents system crashes during high-demand periods. Patients facing unavailable slots at their local centre turn to the Virtual Health District for alternatives, or they can go for a coffee while waiting rather than staring endlessly at the number board for theirs to come up.

Direct links between pharmacies and doctors improve care for chronic conditions. Digital training programmes, delivered via the Puntos Vuela centres, particularly support older residents in adopting these technologies.

Ambitious health digital strategy 2030

All advancements remain in line with the Estrategia de Salud Digital 2030, supported by over €316 million in initial funding. Plans embrace an artificial intelligence model for improved screening, and deploying cutting-edge equipment is in the plans too.

Antonio Sanz highlighted the goal of building an efficient, accessible and truly patient-centred system. Smartphones increasingly serve as the primary entry point to Andalucia’s public healthcare in this connected, digital future.
