Alan Boardman, charity fundraiser and leading expert on the history and culture of Mijas has just reached a major milestone in his efforts help fund vital Costa del Sol charities: His charity walking tours of Mijas have just hit the €30,000 mark.
During the Covid epidemic of 2020/21 many charities throughout the world were badly affected because one of their main income streams, events, was cut off due to the restrictions on movement and numbers of people gathering in one place. As these restrictions started to lift, Mijas resident Alan Boardman saw an opportunity to help local charities here on the Costa del Sol and inland by offering guided tours of his beloved Mijas pueblo.
Years of research behind fascinating tours
Initially working under the umbrella of the Simply Surviving Group established by Val Williams, Alan spent a year researching the history of Mijas pueblo including chatting to some older residents who, as he says, “happily provided me with information you just can’t find in history books.” Alan’s Walking Tours quickly became popular and soon were fully booked well in advance. Each month or two months either Alan chooses, or someone nominates, a Costa del Sol (or inland) charity and during that period all donations are saved and presented to that charity.
Alan has now supported 27 different charities (including several one-off events), helped by a fortnightly Fun Quiz held in Fibbers Irish Bar in Torreblanca and, during the summer months, Dixie’s Bar in central Fuengirola. He has a list stretching well into next year of registered charities he hopes to support.
The Walking Tours have attracted well over 200 five star reviews on TripAdvisor.
