AI traffic lights installed at busy Orihuela Costa roundabout to ease congestion

WORK was carried out this week to install AI-powered traffic lights at one of the busiest and most problematic junctions on the southern Costa Blanca, in an effort to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

The system is being introduced at the Punta Prima roundabout on the N-332, a key route connecting Torrevieja with Orihuela Costa. The junction handles tens of thousands of vehicles daily and has long been known as a bottleneck, particularly during peak travel periods such as Easter and the summer season.

Smart system to manage traffic in real time

The new traffic lights use artificial intelligence to monitor traffic conditions and adjust signal timings automatically. Cameras and sensors placed around the roundabout collect real-time data, allowing the system to respond dynamically depending on the volume and direction of vehicles.

This approach is designed to reduce waiting times and prevent long queues from forming, especially during high-demand periods when traffic can build up rapidly. Authorities hope the technology will create a smoother and more efficient flow of vehicles through the junction.

Long-standing congestion issues

The Punta Prima roundabout has been a source of frustration for drivers for years, with queues often stretching for hundreds of metres. Its location on a major coastal route means it experiences constant pressure from both local traffic and seasonal visitors. The installation of the new system aims to address these long-standing issues without the need for major structural changes to the road layout, offering a more flexible and cost-effective solution.

Funded project with regional impact

The project has been backed by Spain’s Ministry of Transport and funded through European recovery funds, with an investment of just over €400,000. Officials see it as part of a broader push to modernise infrastructure using digital technologies. While the long-term goal is to improve circulation, drivers were advised to expect temporary disruption during the installation phase, including partial road closures expected to continue until the end of May.

Potential model for future upgrades

If successful, the AI traffic system could be extended to other busy junctions across the region. Authorities believe the use of smart technology could play a key role in managing increasing traffic volumes, particularly in coastal areas where demand fluctuates throughout the year. With installation now underway, the Punta Prima roundabout may soon see a significant improvement in traffic conditions.
