Alicante City Council has pre-awarded a €235,000 contract to the Spanish Red Cross to deliver a new programme aimed at preventing unwanted loneliness, a growing concern among older residents across the city. The initiative targets people over the age of 60 and forms part of a wider strategy to improve wellbeing, social connection and early intervention in vulnerable groups.
Local authorities say loneliness is increasingly recognised as a serious social and health issue, particularly in areas with ageing populations and a high number of people living alone. For many residents, including foreign retirees, limited family networks and language barriers can make isolation more likely.
A structured approach to prevention and support
The programme will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team of around 12 professionals, including psychologists, social workers and educators. Support will be provided through local social centres as well as direct outreach, including home visits for those with reduced mobility.
The plan includes more than 800 weekly interventions, ranging from emotional support and cognitive stimulation to group activities and digital skills training. These sessions are designed not only to reduce isolation but also to help participants stay active, connected and independent for longer.
Officials have highlighted the importance of early detection, with the programme aiming to identify signs of loneliness before they develop into more serious mental or physical health issues. By combining individual support with community-based activities, the initiative seeks to build long-term resilience and stronger local networks.
What this means for residents and expats
For Alicante’s international community, the programme could offer an important support system, particularly for older expats living alone or far from family. Access to structured social activities and personalised support can play a key role in improving quality of life and maintaining independence.
The involvement of the Red Cross, an organisation with extensive experience in social care programmes across Spain, is expected to ensure a consistent and professional service.
A wider push to address social isolation
City officials have described unwanted loneliness as one of the most pressing social challenges facing modern communities. The new programme reflects a shift towards preventative care, focusing on maintaining wellbeing rather than reacting to crisis situations.
The contract is expected to be formally awarded in the coming weeks, with the programme set to roll out in phases. Authorities will monitor its impact closely, with the possibility of expanding similar initiatives in the future if results prove successful.
