Alicante sees surge in pet ownership with nearly half a million animals registered

Alicante province is experiencing a sharp rise in pet ownership, with official figures showing that nearly half a million dogs and cats are now registered across the region. The increase reflects a wider lifestyle shift, with more residents choosing to bring animals into their homes in recent years.

According to the latest data, there are now close to 487,600 registered pets in the province, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. The growth is not evenly distributed, however, with one group in particular seeing a notable surge.

Cats drive fastest growth in pet ownership

While dogs still make up the majority of registered animals, it is cats that are driving the most dramatic increase. Registrations for cats have risen by around 37 per cent, making them the fastest-growing segment of pet ownership in Alicante.

Experts suggest this trend may be linked to changing living conditions, particularly in urban areas. Cats are often seen as easier to care for in smaller homes or apartments, making them a popular choice for both younger residents and older individuals living alone. At the same time, dogs continue to maintain a strong presence, particularly in suburban and rural areas where space is less of a constraint.

One pet for every four residents

The latest figures suggest that Alicante now has roughly one registered pet for every four residents, highlighting just how widespread pet ownership has become. This ratio places the province among the areas in Spain with the highest concentration of domestic animals.

For many, pets have become an essential part of daily life, offering companionship, emotional support and a sense of routine. This has been especially noticeable in the years following the pandemic, when more people began spending time at home and reassessing their lifestyles.

What’s behind the increase?

Several factors appear to be contributing to the rise. Alongside lifestyle changes, increased awareness around animal welfare and responsible ownership has played a role. More pet owners are now registering their animals and complying with identification requirements, which may also explain part of the growth in official figures.

The presence of a large international community in Alicante province may also be influencing the trend. Many expats moving to Spain choose to bring pets with them or adopt locally, adding to the overall numbers. In addition, improved access to veterinary care, pet services and specialised products has made it easier than ever to own and care for animals.
