Holidaymakers from the UK frequently encounter confusion when navigating roundabouts during sunny escapes to Spain. Many take hire cars on arrival and instinctively apply UK driving habits, only to face unexpected hazards and extremely high penalties in a country where traffic flows counter-clockwise. A recent viral social media clip from the Guardia Civil gives a sneak peak at this kind of moment with a couple who mistook the two lanes on a roundabout for a two-way road before Guardia Civil officers intervened immediately.
Common mistakes put lives at risk
Drivers unfamiliar with local rules sometimes enter or circulate clockwise instead of following the standard counter-clockwise direction. Such errors force other vehicles to swerve or brake suddenly, creating high-risk situations at busy junctions. Spain’s Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) says that improper roundabout use ranks among frequent causes of collisions, especially near popular tourist spots, motorway junctions and airport exits. Viral footage from early April captures exactly this scenario, with police quickly stopping the offending vehicle to prevent potential tragedy.
Hefty penalties await offenders
Circulating against the established flow counts as a very serious infringement under Spanish traffic law. Offenders typically receive a base quantity of €500 fine together with the loss of six points on their licence. In more severe cases involving reckless endangerment, authorities may pursue criminal charges, potentially leading to prison terms or extended driving bans. Rental companies will pass on any penalties to UK customers, adding huge unexpected costs to holidays.

Seasoned cross-boarder drivers advise preparation before departure
Seasoned travellers recommend studying Spanish roundabout etiquette in advance through official DGT resources or apps. Key advice includes yielding to traffic already on the roundabout, signalling clearly, and exiting from the outer lane. Older British drivers feature in past incidents, such as a 76-year-old who travelled 17km the wrong way on a motorway in Alicante in late 2025, showing how disorientation can escalate quickly.
It’s not just Brit drivers who sometimes make this faux pas. In 2015, a couple from Galicia, northern Spain were caught out when they were returning home on the ferry to Oviedo, the couple drove out of the port straight into an on coming car. Thankfully, everyone involved was physically unhurt. The Spanish couple were driving on the wrong side of the road on a Spanish road.
Simple steps reduce dangers for visitors
Familiarisation with counter-clockwise circulation makes a significant difference. Many hire firms now provide briefings or sat-nav settings tailored to Spanish roads. With millions of UK tourists visiting annually, awareness campaigns hope to cut down on these avoidable risks. Staying alert and double-checking directions helps ensure safe, penalty-free journeys through Spain’s scenic routes.
