Elche hospital introduces automated drug control systems

A major hospital in Costa Blanca South has introduced new automated systems to improve the safety and control of medication use, particularly for high-risk drugs. The Elche General Hospital has installed three automated drug dispensing systems aimed at enhancing security, traceability and efficiency in handling controlled medications. The investment in the new technology totals €225,000.

How the new system works

The system includes a central unit located in the hospital’s pharmacy department, alongside two additional units placed in surgical and outpatient surgery areas. These function as automated dispensing cabinets, allowing healthcare professionals to access medication securely using fingerprint identification.

Each transaction is recorded with precise time and user data, ensuring full traceability of medications, particularly narcotics. The system also links dispensing directly to patient identification, replacing traditional manual processes and helping hospitals comply with strict legal requirements.

A shift away from manual processes

One of the main benefits of the system is the automation of previously manual tasks. In its first three months of use, the system handled nearly 2,900 units of medication for over 1,700 patients, eliminating the need for the same number of manual prescriptions and paper records. This reduces administrative workload for healthcare staff while improving accuracy and reducing the risk of human error. The system also monitors stock levels automatically, issuing alerts for low supplies or upcoming expiry dates.
