Six saved after boat sinks off Javea in dramatic summer sea rescue

A summer day on the Mediterranean turned into a frightening ordeal for six people on Saturday July 25 after their motorboat began sinking off the coast of Javea, triggering a rapid rescue operation involving both Maritime Rescue crews and fellow boaters.

The incident happened on Saturday near Cala del Portitxol, one of Javea’s most picturesque and popular coves, where hundreds of recreational boats visit throughout the summer. What started as an ordinary trip on the water quickly escalated when the vessel suffered a serious leak, leaving those on board in danger as the boat began to sink.

Thanks to the swift actions of another nearby vessel and Spain’s Maritime Rescue service, everyone on board was brought safely to shore without injury.

Boat began sinking after taking on water

According to Maritime Rescue, the emergency began when the motorboat developed a “vía de agua” – a breach that allowed water to enter the vessel – while sailing close to Cala del Portitxol.

The Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Valencia immediately launched an emergency response, dispatching the rescue vessel Salvamar Fénix to the scene after receiving reports that the boat was in danger of sinking.

However, before professional rescuers reached the location, another leisure boat in the area had already stepped in to help.

Fellow boaters save all six passengers

The nearby vessel Borso IV reached the stricken boat first and managed to rescue all six people before the motorboat disappeared beneath the surface.

The crew then informed Maritime Rescue that everyone had been safely recovered, allowing the Salvamar Fénix crew to continue coordinating the incident and ensure there were no further risks in the area.

Maritime Rescue later publicly acknowledged the actions of the Borso IV crew, highlighting their fast response and thanking them for assisting people in distress at sea.

The operation ended with all six passengers safe, despite the complete loss of the vessel. Authorities have not reported any injuries.

Busy summer waters increase rescue demand

The rescue comes during one of the busiest periods of the year along the Costa Blanca coastline.

Javea’s coves, including Cala del Portitxol, attract thousands of visitors every summer thanks to their clear waters and dramatic scenery. The increase in recreational boating, paddleboarding, kayaking and other water sports inevitably leads to a rise in emergency call-outs during the holiday season.

While mechanical problems such as engine failures are relatively common, vessels taking on water can quickly become dangerous, particularly if they begin sinking before help arrives.

In this case, the rapid response from nearby boaters prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.

Maritime Rescue plays a vital role

Spain’s Maritime Rescue service, known as Salvamento Marítimo, operates around the clock to respond to emergencies along the country’s extensive coastline.

Its responsibilities include rescuing people in danger at sea, coordinating emergency responses, assisting disabled vessels and helping protect the marine environment from pollution following maritime incidents. Rescue coordination centres, including the one in Valencia, oversee operations across large stretches of the Mediterranean coast, deploying specialist rescue boats and helicopters whenever necessary.

During the summer months, crews frequently respond to incidents involving recreational craft, kayaks, paddleboards and swimmers who become stranded or encounter difficulties offshore.

Only last week, the Salvamar Fénix rescued two adults and two children after strong currents carried their kayaks out to sea near the Cova Tallada between Dénia and Javea. All four were safely brought ashore without injury.

A reminder that conditions can change in moments

Although the Mediterranean often appears calm during the summer, maritime authorities regularly remind boat owners that emergencies can develop with little warning.

A mechanical fault, collision or hull leak can quickly leave even experienced sailors in difficulty, making proper maintenance, safety equipment and communication essential before heading out to sea.

Saturday’s successful rescue also demonstrated another important aspect of maritime safety: the willingness of fellow boaters to assist those in trouble. In this case, the actions of the crew aboard Borso IV, combined with the coordinated response from Maritime Rescue, ensured that all six people escaped unharmed despite their boat sinking beneath the waters off one of Javea’s best-known beauty spots.
