Residents and visitors in Murcia can prepare to step back in time this September as the city will transform its historic riverbanks into a bustling medieval spectacle. Running from September 10th to September 14, the much-anticipated Mercado Medieval de Murcia, or Murcia Medieval Market, will take place along the city’s iconic Paseo del Malecon, offering five action-packed days of immersive history, culture, and vibrant street entertainment.
Step back in time along Murcia’s iconic riverbank
Organised in collaboration with the Federación de Asociaciones de Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos de Murcia and local event specialist La Fragua de Vulcano, this annual market is a major highlight of the city’s September calendar of festivities. Taking place along the Segura River on the picturesque promenade, the venue will provide an idyllic, immersive setting for an authentic and fun journey into Spain’s rich medieval past.
Five days of history and live entertainment
Visitors of all ages can look forward to a diverse and action-packed programme. The festivities will kick off with an inaugural opening proclamation, setting the stage for continuous street theatre, live music to embody the time period, and dynamic and entertaining historical reenactments. Visitors will be able to explore an authentic historical world, browse cultural exhibitions, and watch skilled artisans demonstrate traditional crafts. Interactive workshops will also give attendees hands-on opportunities to try their hand at ancient skills, while various competitions and pop-up performances keep the energy high throughout the five days.
Artisanal stalls and local heritage
In addition to the lively entertainment, marketgoers can wander through dozens of market stalls brimming with handmade crafts, artisanal goods, unique souvenirs, and mouth-watering culinary treats cooked fresh on-site. The atmospheric setting alongside the Paseo del Malecon, a promenade historically built to protect Murcia from river floods, makes it a natural gathering point near the city centre, perfectly bridging the city’s urban heart with its surrounding agricultural heritage.
Whether you are a history enthusiast, a family looking for a memorable day out, a curious newcomer looking to take home a unique artisan craft, or a local soaking up the seasonal celebrations, the Mercado Medieval de Murcia promises an unforgettable experience in the vibrant Costa Calida city. Admission is open to all, making it one of the absolute highlights on Murcia’s autumn cultural calendar.
