Torrevieja invests €1.94 million in home-care service for older and vulnerable residents

Older and vulnerable residents in Torrevieja are receiving extra help at home following the launch of a new municipal care service backed by an investment of almost €2 million.

The €1.94 million service is designed to help older people, residents with recognised dependency and families who need additional support, allowing more people to remain safely and independently in their own homes.

A team of 26 home-care assistants and two full-time social workers will provide practical support with everyday tasks, personal care and other needs.

Extra help brought directly into people’s homes

The service also includes six portable stair-climbing chairs to help people with reduced mobility living in buildings where access can be difficult.

An additional 1,350 hours of free care will be available each year to respond to emergencies or situations where families suddenly require more support.

Residents using the service will also have access to additional help including physiotherapy, podiatry and personal care services at no extra cost.

The aim is to provide support that can adapt to the different needs of residents, helping them continue with everyday life while remaining in familiar surroundings.

Tackling loneliness and supporting independence

Importantly, the programme aims to tackle loneliness and social isolation, as well as helping people maintain their independence and providing valuable support for relatives and carers.

Torrevieja has a large and diverse population, including many older residents who want to continue living in their own homes and communities for as long as possible.

The new service aims to make that possible by bringing practical assistance directly to those who need it rather than requiring residents to leave familiar surroundings.

Regular contact with care workers can also provide companionship and reassurance for people who may otherwise spend long periods alone.

More support for Torrevieja families

The programme also gives families greater support when caring for older or dependent relatives, particularly when circumstances change unexpectedly.

The additional emergency care hours mean extra assistance can be provided when families suddenly find themselves needing help.

The council says the expanded service represents an important commitment to social care, with almost €2 million being invested in providing practical assistance within the community.

For the residents and families using it, however, its value will be much more personal: extra help when it is needed, greater independence and the reassurance of knowing support is available within their own community.
