Marbella is opening its ancient gates with 27 free guided walks through the old town

History lovers, visitors and curious wanderers can dive deep into Marbella’s beautiful cobbled lanes, as the town hall launches a new programme of guided visits through its wonderful Old Town.

What does the new walking tour scheme involve?

Marbella Council has confirmed 27 guided visits through the town’s historic quarter, led by specialist interpreters trained in bringing Moorish, Christian and Mediterranean heritage to life. Organisers have designed the initiative to spread appreciation of local history and architecture among residents, schoolchildren and visitors. On Saturday, September 19 the first outing, predicted to take around 2 hours, will take place, opening a calendar of activities that will continue over the coming months. Registration is completely free, though places are very  limited, so early booking is advisable if you wish to join.

Where will the routes take visitors?

Guides will lead groups past some of the town’s most treasured landmarks, including the popular Plaza de los Naranjos, surviving sections of the old Arab city walls, and the Iglesia Mayor de la Encarnacion. Explanations are adapted for different audiences, allowing both children and adults to grasp how successive civilisations shaped the area over centuries.

Council prioritises local heritage

Officials from Marbella’s Culture department want the scheme to protect, promote and celebrate what the resort offers culturally and educationally. Their hope that these visits will deepen public understanding of a past that is more that the town’s glamorous modern reputation. For younger residents specifically, organisers would like the walks to act as a classroom companion, encouraging pupils to value their surroundings and develop respect for the area.
