Runners will take to the streets of Almuñecar on Sunday, September 27, for the XXXVII Prueba de Fondo ‘Trópico de Europa’, with a new 10-kilometre course through Vega de Rio Verde, the town and seafront.

Starting and finishing at the Francisco Bonet Municipal Sports Stadium, the race gets under way at 10am. The event forms part of the 39th Gran Premio de Fondo ‘Universo Lorca’, organised by Granada Provincial Council.

This year’s route takes runners through Almuñecar, beginning with streets around the town before heading through agricultural areas known for their cherimoya trees.

Race heads towards Almuñecar seafront

After passing through roads including Carrera de la Concepcion, Suspiro del Moro and Camino Real de Motril, runners will head towards the coast via Avenida de Andalucia and Plaza Madrid.

The coastal section includes Paseo Puerta del Mar, Paseo Reina Sofia and Paseo Velilla before the route turns back towards the stadium through the streets of Almuñecar.

Road users should expect some disruption while the race is taking place, although the information provided by organisers does not yet give a timetable for individual road closures.

Charity places available for €10

Anyone who missed the registration deadline can still take part through a €10 charity race number, with all proceeds going to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).

A ‘zero bib’ is available for people who just want to donate to the charity without running.

Local residents registered in Almuñecar or La Herradura can enter free of charge through the Municipal Sports Department office at Francisco Bonet Stadium until September 24. Registration is open from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 9pm.

Entries are available through the official Gran Premio de Fondo website. The race adds a sporting event to a month for Almuñecar, which hosted the first Costa Tropical departure of La Vuelta in September.
