The Hotel Benidorm Plaza hosted an international a workshop on the monitoring of the endangered bird species the European Storm Petrel.
Speakers attended from France and Spain, and participants came from as far afield as Nicaragua and Cuba.
Forty technicians and naturalists compared data accumulated over an ongoing 20 year programme where the migratory habits of this threatened species were followed with a view to better understanding and protecting the species. The bird is known as a ‘paiño’ in Spanish, and has a colony on Benidorm island, making the town an appropriate venue for the conference.
The workshop: a joint Franco-Spanish initiative, was sponsored and funded by NCOs in both countries, with the collaboration of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment of the Generalitat Valenciana, The Parc Natural de la Serra Gelada, the City Council of Benidorm, and Fuster Group Hotels.
