Storm damage forces castle closure

THE council has had to close down Salobreña’s Moorish castle due to the extent of damage caused by recent storms.
Although water has now drained from most of the parts that were flooded, they remain covered in mud, walls have fallen down and the visitors centre affected by flooding, municipal technicians reported.
The municipal heritage expert and engineers in charge of current restoration works informed the council that although most of the damage is minor, visitors’ safety could not be guaranteed until cleaning and repair work has been done, leading local Mayor Maria Eugenia Rufino to decide to close it down for now.
Although there is no set date for visits to resume, Rufino said she hoped it would be early next year.
