VALENCIA´S emergency services have confirmed that a team of six professional cyclists on a training exercise were knocked off their bikes when a British female driver ploughed into them in Benigembla, near Alicante.

The driver, whose identity is still unconfirmed, was said to have been on the wrong side of the road and heading in the opposite direction to the cyclists when the collision happened on January 24.

All in the German cycling team Giant-Alpecin were hospitalized as a result of the accident, with American member, Chad Haga, being airlifted from the scene after sustaining serious injuries to his face and head, and other teammates sustaining, among other damage, a broken wrist, a fractured forearm and deep flesh wounds.

Giant-Alpecin´s team physician Anko Boelens confirmed that ´everyone on the team is in shock right now´ but that those riders involved were all ´conscious, stable and approachable.´
