CARRASQUETA ROAD: Inviting for motorcyclists and speeding drivers Photo credit: Garbanx
The winding CV-800 is beloved of bikers, some of whom stage improvised and totally illegal races there. Others ride alone but in both cases the mountain continues to claim victims, with four motorcyclists dead so far this year.
The latest was a 62-year-old man whose motorcycle for reasons not yet clarified left the road and hit a parapet before running into the crash barrier on the other side of the road. The accident occurred at a point just below the Carrasqueta’s peak, travelling towards Alcoy.
The Guardia Civil’s Traffic Police and a SAMU emergency ambulance with a medical team were soon on the scene but were unable to save the motorcyclist’s life and could only confirm his death.
In recent months the Guardia Civil have stepped up roadside controls as well as their presence both in uniform and plain clothes following residents’ complaints about the number of speeding bikers.
According to reports in the Spanish media, they are now considering installing radar on the section of the CV-800 where most accidents occur, while increasing the number of drones and helicopters keeping watch from the sky.
