In some respects, the UK is a pretty underrated holiday destination. While the number of people choosing to stay in the country for a holiday has increased, many of them are missing out on some of its best parts.

The UK countryside is full of interesting and picturesque holiday destinations, from rolling hills and ancient woodlands to seaside sanctuaries. It doesn’t matter whether you head north, south, east or west, you can find a charming slice of countryside to enjoy.

Between cosy campsites, character-filled lodges and hot tub holidays, the UK has a rural destination to suit any tastes. But if you need a little more convincing on why you should head to the countryside for your next UK holiday, then read on…

Breathtaking scenery

Surely everyone knows that the UK countryside has some breathtaking landscapes? They’ve certainly featured in enough poems, paintings and films at this point! From the windswept beauty of the Lake District to the dramatic clifftops and beaches of the Jurassic Coast, every region offers its own unique look and charm.

With a variety of National Parks and a total of 46 Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) it’s not hard to find somewhere truly beautiful to enjoy your UK holiday. Take advantage of amazing photo opportunities as you explore to make memories that’ll be the envy of your friends.

A variety of activities

There’s only so many things that you can do in a city. In the countryside, on the other hand, there are a wealth of different activities to choose from. Even if you’re not the most active person you can enjoy leisurely walks through quiet woodlands or along the sandy beaches.

For those a bit more inclined towards adrenaline, water activities from surfing to windsailing are available up and down the UK coast. Or, if you prefer to stay on dry land, try hiking up one of the UK’s mountains or take a zipline across an abandoned slate quarry.

Historical sites to explore

As a country with a long and storied history, the UK has seen many civilisations come and go on its shores. And more than a few of those left behind their buildings!

Counts say that there are more than 4,000 castles to be found throughout the UK, many of which are open to the public today. Stately homes are another great way to spend a day out in the countryside, with these former manors often boasting splendidly maintained gardens to explore.

Not to mention ancient sights like Stonehenge, which offer a glimpse back into prehistoric times and a culture long gone.

Short travel distances

Compared to plenty of other countries, the UK is actually rather compact. While our small island nation still has more than its fair share of sights to see and activities to do, it takes a lot less time to get from one place to another.

Travel may not be instant, but you can still cross the country in the space of a day. Thanks to a solid rail network you don’t have to rely on driving to make the journey. But, if you still want to drive yourself, it’s easy to make it a fun road trip.

If you’re heading between the major cities – or even down to sunny Cornwall! – it’s easy to take advantage of short regional flights as well.

Poets and artists have been drawing inspiration from the UK countryside for centuries. And it’s not just the beautiful natural landscapes that should draw you towards a countryside holiday.

A UK holiday can be all about relaxation, adventure, adrenaline, or an exploration of history. There’s no reason not to get planning your next getaway today.
