Why are Casinos so synonymous with luxury?

Gambling precedes written records so it’s impossible to determine whether the act has always been associated with luxury. However, since the first casinos were opened in the 17th century, they’ve been viewed as opulent, luxurious places.
Early casinos were reserved for the elite classes, had strict etiquette and entry rules, and attracted high rollers. Today, many casinos are viewed in the same way: as luxurious palaces of entertainment. However, they’re no longer reserved for the elite and can be attended by all.
Modern gambling
Gambling is different now than it was in the 17th century. Casinos no longer have a strict dress code, and visitors can mostly dress how they wish.
Plus, new gaming options have emerged over the last few decades. While physical casinos remain glamorous, they’re no longer the only gambling hubs for table and slot games.
No matter where you are in the world, you can enjoy iGaming sites. It’s possible to access offshore casino sites – i.e., casinos that operate outside of the UK – from wherever you are. Gambling writer Kane Pepi, who was tasked with coming up with this year’s non-Gamstop casino ratings, states that offshore sites do not need to comply with the regulations set by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) as they are not licensed by this body. This means that they don’t have to comply with the Gamstop self-exclusion scheme, which is a must for UKGC-licenced casinos.
Sites such as this make online gambling widely accessible, regardless of restrictions. This has put a strain on physical casinos, as many people are opting for online casino alternatives in the modern world of gambling.
Online casinos have somewhat changed gambling etiquette for players, too. Gamblers can dress however they want when using an iGaming site, which somewhat takes away from the glamour of the activity.
The history of Casinos
Let’s take a look at three casinos that cemented the idea of casinos being synonymous with luxury:
Il Ridotto
Il Ridotto was established during the Venetian Carnival of 1638. It was meant to offer fun and excitement during the quieter times of the carnival. As the first casino, it essentially set the rules for those that would follow, and those rules were strict. It was only open to privileged visitors, had a strict dress code that required the wearing of masks and hats, and required that players order food and drinks from the casino.
Le Grande Casino de Monte Carlo
Although other casinos came before it, Le Grande Casino de Monte Carlo in Monaco could be seen as the first modern casino. Le Grande Casino was formally approved in 1856 and it was only recently that it relaxed the requirement that all visitors wear a sport coat to be granted entry. Monte Carlo has long been associated with luxury, and its casinos are considered some of the best in the world.
Such was the opulence and luxury of Le Grande Casino de Monte Carlo that it became heavily featured in global movies including at least two James Bond films: GoldenEye and Casino Royale.
Monaco’s gambling scene is still defined by luxury and its casino tourism industry was valued at $5,041.4 million (£3,791,510,905) in 2024.
The Crockford Gentlemen’s Club
There is some debate about the first legal casino in the UK. Gambling halls and possibly even underground casinos may have existed earlier, but the Crockford’s Gentlemen’s Club, which was formed by William Crockford in 1828 with the financial backing of the Duke of Wellington, is widely considered to have paved the way for legal casinos.
Following the establishment of the Betting and Gambling Act in 1960, The Casino Club in Port Talbot was the first legal casino to launch. Port Talbot was a thriving industrial hub at the time, and the casino took a lot of cues from opulent establishments around the world, to attract middle and high-class patrons.
Casino opulence
Casinos naturally attract a lot of money and, in terms of marketing, they want to give players the belief they can win big. One way they have traditionally done this is through opulent design and extravagant furnishings. Casinos like Caesar’s Palace, in Las Vegas, which is another city considered to offer luxurious accommodation and surroundings. Its casinos rely heavily on the use of gold in their decorations as it offers a glimpse of what lucky players could enjoy.
Modern Casino changes
Today, there are estimated to be around 8,000 casinos globally. This does include some of the most prestigious casinos, which still have high entry requirements.
Many of the casinos in Las Vegas have relaxed dress codes and lower minimum bets, although players who want to bet a few pence on a game of blackjack are better suited to online play. Many online casinos have very low minimum bets and buy-in levels, which makes them accessible to all.
Conclusion
Casinos are considered the height of luxury and opulence thanks largely to their gold-emblazoned designs, marketing, and their history as being established by and for the middle and upper classes of society. However, online casinos have changed this outlook somewhat, with iGaming websites accepting lower bets and having no dress code or other entry requirements.
