In Ukraine, people usually remove spiders and their webs from their homes.

However, Christmas brings a surprising twist: spiders are welcomed during the holiday season because they’re believed to bring good luck.

This tradition comes from an old Ukrainian legend. The story is about a widow and her children who lived in a small, cold hut. One day, a pinecone fell from a tree and grew into a small tree. The children, excited about having a Christmas tree, cared for it but couldn’t afford decorations. On Christmas Eve, they went to bed, disappointed by the bare tree.

That night, the household spiders spun beautiful webs across the tree’s branches. When the children woke up on Christmas morning, they were amazed to see the webs sparkling in the sunlight, which made them look like silver and gold. The legend says that from that day on, the family never lacked for anything.

Today, Ukrainians decorate their Christmas trees with artificial spider webs to honour this miracle, believing they bring prosperity and good fortune.

So, if you see a spider in your home during the holidays, remember the story and think twice before removing its web.
