Örebro School Shooting: Deadliest massacre in Swedish history

The deadliest shooting in Swedish history, the Örebro school shooting has claimed at least 10 lives with another 6 people currently in stable conditions in hospital after treatment for gunshot wounds.

As the investigation into the massacre progresses, more information is being slowly learned about the shooter 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, who shot and killed at least ten people before turning the gun on himself.

Relatives of the gunman have said he was a reclusive, lonely and unemployed figure. He had been turned down for military service on multiple occasions as he did not have sufficient school grades to enrol and he had licenses for four hunting rifles.

Although officials have searched his home, the police have not yet released details of what they have found. They have said he acted alone and that they do not think it was terrorism related.

Whilst the investigation continues the country and Örebro city are in mourning. The King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden have visited and paid their respects at the school, as have the Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and his wife Birgitta Ed who also laid flowers at the memorial outside the Örebro school.

King Carl spoke to the press and said “A grieving process is hard to do alone… I think all of Sweden feels it has experienced this traumatic event.” The City Hall of Örebro have stated that the municipality is in mourning “Wednesday and going forward, we in Örebro municipality will flag at half-mast, to honour the deceased. There will also be a book of condolences in the City Hall, where you can write down your thoughts around what happened.”

The shooting happened on Tuesday, February 4 at Risbergska School in Örebro, just after midday. The Risbergska campus is dedicated to training adults who have not yet completed early education. According to reports, Andersson changed in one of the school toilets into military style clothing before he began his killing spree.
