Women turning 18 after 1 July 2025 will now be called up for Armed Forces Day and assessed for service just like men, as Denmark moves towards full gender equality in military conscription.
Female conscription for the military officially approved in Denmark
From July 2025, Denmark will implement gender-equal conscription, following months of debate. Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday, March 25, after securing agreement from the defence conciliation circle, as reported by Berlingske.
The change comes after the Liberal Alliance dropped its veto against the proposal, allowing the measure to be brought forward by a year.
Previously, plans to introduce conscription for women were blocked by both the Liberal Alliance and the Danish Democrats. Two parallel defence agreements were created as a workaround, with gender equality in conscription originally planned only after the next general election.
Armed Forces Day 2026
Under the new model, women who turn 18 after July 1, 2025, will be called up to participate in Armed Forces Day in 2026, where they’ll be assessed for service on the same basis as men.
Acting Chief of Defence Michael Hyldgaard confirmed the initiative is backed by the Armed Forces. When asked whether it was a military recommendation to introduce gender equality in conscription, Hyldgaard replied:
“Yes. Gender equality is good, and it increases the opportunity to build combat power in the Armed Forces.”
He acknowledged that while the final decision was political, it aligns with operational goals.
Danish military service extended from 2026
Alongside the gender inclusion reforms, Denmark will also extend the length of conscription. From August 2026, service will increase from the current 4 months to 11 months, according to a report by Berlingske.
This marks a significant step in Denmark’s ongoing national defence strengthening efforts.
