BAZA is getting ready for La Fiesta de la Cruz (The Festival of the Cross), which will take place from May 1 to May 4 this year.

Decorated crosses fill the streets

The festival is all about the crosses that are set up around the town. These crosses are decorated with flowers, ribbons, and candles, making the streets look colourful and festive. You can find them in squares, on streets, and even hanging from balconies.

A tradition with Christian roots

Originally a Christian celebration of the Holy Cross, La Fiesta de la Cruz has become a fun event for everyone. Locals and visitors gather to enjoy music, dancing, and traditional food.

Don’t miss this Spring celebration

The Cruces de Mayo tradition

The Cruces de Mayo (May Crosses) festival has been celebrated in various parts of Spain since at least the 17th century. It is believed to have roots in the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine. Over time, the religious tradition evolved into a popular springtime celebration filled with colour, music, and community spirit. Today, it’s a chance for neighbourhoods, local groups, and families to come together and create the most beautiful and creative cross displays. Many towns also hold competitions to reward the best-decorated crosses.
