Drivers across Spain are feeling the squeeze as petrol costs continue to increase daily. The war in Iran, and especially attacks crossing the Strait of Hormuz, are having a knock-on effect on fuel prices around the world, pressuring wallets and leading to a generalised increase in the cost of living everywhere. This is where online tools like GeoPortal come in, and is probably one of the most accessed government websites at the moment.
Blockades in the Strait of Hormuz and the threat to oil tankers have pushed crude prices higher, as well as the insurance premiums of fuel transport. In turn this has been forcing service stations to adjust totem price signs rapidly. Everyone is looking for ways to cut expenses, turning to reliable tools for locating affordable refuelling spots. While government officials argue potential interventions, practical solutions are available to empower individuals right now.
Experts predict sustained increases unless geopolitical issues resolve soon. Recent data shows some urban stations exceeding €1.70 per litre for unleaded 95 or €1.80 for diesel. Savings add up quickly, and choosing wisely for a 50-litre tank could mean €10 or more stays in your wallet. Digital resources from official sources simplify this hunt, offering real-time insights without extra costs.
Discover the Geoportal: Your free fuel price-saving ally
Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition already provides a powerful online resource. Geoportal aggregates prices from every petrol station in the country, refreshing data every five minutes, so to reflect near-real-time figures for confident travel cost planning. The online platform gains relevance during crises. Historical trends reveal how costs evolve, aiding predictions for future fills. Electric vehicle owners can appreciate integrated details on charging points too. There are no subscriptions required, just a connection to the Internet.

Step-by-step guide to finding the cheapest petrol
Access Geoportal via its dedicated website geoportalgasolineras.es or download the Ruta-E app for Android and iOS devices. Navigation proves pretty intuitive once inside. The app and webpage are even available in English, German, French and Italian – just select which language you want the results in at the top of the page.
In English, start by selecting “Type of search”, where there are even options for maritime fuel posts and electric charging stations. Narrow down to specific provinces and localities; zoom further using postcodes in larger cities. Pick desired fuel varieties, from standard unleaded 95 E5 and diesel A to alternatives like bioethanol or hydrogen. Not all of these will be necessary, only for the more specific and picky. Below the selections, click on the check boxes “Most economical P.S.” and “Search”. One can repeat searches as needed, especially before long trips along major routes, and it doesn’t cost a thing to use.

Extra tips for minimising costs
Combine Geoportal with loyalty schemes from major chains like Repsol or Cepsa. Plan routes around low-cost clusters, potentially saving more over time. You can even monitor historical data to spot patterns, refuelling during dips. App users enjoy mobile convenience, including EV infrastructure maps for hybrid transitions.
Rising prices are a pain for everyone, yet smart tools like this level the playing field a little more. It’s just a question of knowing where to find them.
