Thousands of older people across Spain face crushing isolation every day. However, a dedicated volunteer programme in Fuengirola fights back against this growing public health concern through meaningful companionship.

Heartwarming stories from the frontline

Pablo Mascareñas spotted a poster for the Fundación Harena project at a bus stop and felt compelled to act. María Gómez discovered the opportunity while at hospital. Both volunteers wanted to make a difference for vulnerable seniors. Pablo ended up connecting with Dyana, a British expat who has lived on the Costa del Sol for over 30 years. She and her late husband Bryan moved to Fuengirola in the early 1990s. Bryan faced severe health issues, including leg amputation and wheelchair dependence, overwhelming Dyana.

Friends referred the couple to Fundación Harena. Pablo provided crucial support, forging a lasting bond. Even after Bryan’s passing, Pablo continues visiting Dyana, describing the experience as profoundly rewarding. Volunteers often receive more than they give, Pablo explains.

Why unwanted loneliness demands urgent action

Unwanted loneliness affects a significant portion of society, and especially the Costa del Sol. Recent data indicates around 20 per cent of Spaniards experience it, with higher rates among those over 65 and especially pronounced in older age groups over 75.

Rising life expectancy, shifting family structures, low birth rates, and urban living contribute to unprecedented population ageing. Many seniors live alone, sometimes by choice yet still requiring support. Experts say there are increased risks to physical and mental health from prolonged isolation.

Andalucia’s regional protocol identifies loneliness as the top concern for people over 65. Academic research underscores it as a major public health and family care challenge.

Fundación Harena’s broader mission

Founded in Malaga in 2007, Fundación Harena runs multiple initiatives under ‘Soledad 0, Vida 10’ (Loneliness 0, Life 10) to better elderly quality of life. Around 17,000 volunteers participate nationwide. Support adapts to individual needs: home visits, phone calls, hospital accompaniment, or residential care. Susana Serrano, a social worker and volunteer coordinator, tailors interventions accordingly.

Programmes like this prove small acts of kindness combat isolation effectively. Communities benefit when volunteers step forward to build connections and restore joy to later years. If you have a little time in your weekly schedule, contact the foundation, even if Spanish isn’t your strong point, as the charity helps plenty of English-speaking expats in Spain too.
