Firefighters had to spring into action after reports reached authorities at half past midnight in the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, in Mijas. Crews worked through the night to stop flames advancing toward residential zones in Cerrado del Aguila. Operations concluded successfully by 3.30am with the blaze fully extinguished.
Local emergency teams led efforts with one station chief and five firefighters. Two fire engines and two water tankers provided essential backup, operated by additional staff. Local police and Guardia Civil offered crucial coordination throughout the incident.
Dense scrubland behind rapid spread under windy conditions
Francisco Jerez, the responsible councillor, described how thick undergrowth up to two metres high covered the starting point. The area, much of which is earmarked for construction, has been a high risk and magnet for rubbish for a long time. Streets surrounding the plot functioned effectively as natural barriers against further progress. A strong breeze caused rapid spreading of the blaze across the affected area.
Investigators point toward fireworks or firecrackers as a likely trigger, pending official confirmation. Jerez stressed how prompt intervention prevented escalation into nearby housing. Residents experienced only a minor fright rather than serious harm, but it was certainly cause for a sleepless night for many in the area.
Councillor calls for greater community vigilance
Only days before, the mayor of Mijas, Ana Mata, called for local landowners to clean up their land in readiness for the summer wildfire season. Recent wet winter weather produced abundant plant growth across natural areas. Extra vegetation creates additional fuel loads if blazes occur.
Property owners must keep both municipal and private plots clear and maintained. Regular clearing and brush removal reduce dangers substantially. Everyone shares duties in this collective effort to protect local environments.
Mijas summer preparedness measures already active
Mijas Council confirmed its special summer protocol already operates at full capacity. Extra firefighter reinforcements will run from June 15 to September 15. This timeframe matches peak danger months for outdoor fires.
Local authorities continue monitoring conditions closely. Residents play vital roles through simple preventive steps. Collective awareness and action help minimise future incidents in this region.
