Almeria residents experienced horror on Wednesday afternoon, April 1, when a powerful blast tore through La Posada café on Calle Conde Villamonte, claiming at least one life and leaving multiple people injured.
Location near health centre raises concerns
Proximity to medical facilities added urgency to the emergency response in the heart of the Andalucian city. The café sits close to one of Almeria’s main health centres, near the central Plaza de Toros bullring area. Eyewitnesses described a deafening roar followed immediately by a rush of flames and thick smoke billowing from the premises, which instantly prompted frantic calls to emergency services.
Emergency teams deploy massive response operation
Rapid mobilisation brought firefighters, local and national police, and medical ambulances rushing to the scene in record numbers. Authorities also activated specialist TEDAX bomb disposal experts from the Guardia Civil to examine the blast site for any explosive devices. Rescue workers focused intensely on freeing anyone trapped inside the damaged café while dealing with widespread debris.
Parked vehicles on both sides of the street suffered major blast damage from flying objects and fragments hurled by the force of the explosion. Structural impacts appeared even on building facades several metres away, a reflection of the blast’s intensity.
Victim toll remains uncertain in early reports
Initial casualty figures varied, as often happens in fast-moving incidents. Town Hall sources confirmed at least one fatality directly resulting from the blast itself. Reports pointed to two further serious casualties, one unconscious and another awaiting full medical assessment, although early 112 emergency calls suggested up to four injured people overall. Officials quickly cordoned off the busy street, maintaining a heavy security presence as investigations continued.
Gas cylinder suspected as likely cause
While at this stage there are no official statements on the cause of the blast, local speculation on the force and nature of the explosion is pointing at a gas bottle explosion.
Exact circumstances remain under urgent investigation, with forensic teams combing through the wreckage for definitive answers and further victims.
Local communities expressed shock at the sudden violence in an otherwise ordinary friendly neighbourhood spot. Support services stand ready to assist affected families while the full extent of injuries undergoes clarification in hospital updates.
