Five officers from the Metropolitan Police have been removed from operational duty after a bag containing firearms was left unattended in a street close to the home of London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan.

The incident occurred in south London, where the bag was discovered by a member of the public. According to reports, the individual noticed the item and, concerned about its contents, examined it before contacting the authorities. Inside were several weapons and related equipment issued to police.

Contents of the bag

The contents included a submachine gun, a handgun, a conducted energy device, and ammunition. These items are typically assigned to specialist officers and are subject to strict handling procedures. Their presence in a public area raised immediate concerns about safety and accountability.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the equipment had been left behind by officers and was recovered shortly after being reported. The force has not disclosed the precise location or the exact circumstances that led to the bag being abandoned, but it has acknowledged that the matter is being treated as serious.

Officers taken off duty while inquiries are carried out

The five officers involved have been stood down from their duties while an internal investigation is conducted. The review is being handled by the Directorate of Professional Standards, which is responsible for examining conduct within the force.

At this stage, no details have been released regarding whether the officers belong to a firearms unit or another specialist division. However, the type of equipment involved indicates that they were authorised to carry weapons as part of their role.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that leaving such items unattended represents a clear breach of established protocols. Officers entrusted with firearms must adhere to strict guidelines governing their transport, storage and supervision at all times.

The force has said it is working to establish how the situation arose and whether disciplinary action will follow. Outcomes in such cases can range from internal sanctions to more serious consequences, depending on the findings.

Mayor’s office describes incident as serious

The proximity of the incident to the mayor’s residence has added to its sensitivity. While there is no indication that the mayor or his household were directly affected, the presence of unsecured weapons in the vicinity of a high-profile public figure has drawn attention.

A spokesperson for the mayor described the situation as serious and emphasised the importance of maintaining rigorous standards in the handling of police equipment. The mayor’s office has not indicated any further involvement but is understood to be monitoring developments.

Security arrangements around the homes of senior public officials are typically subject to careful planning, although details are rarely disclosed. Incidents involving police equipment in such areas are likely to be subject to close scrutiny.

Public safety concerns raised by discovery

The fact that the bag was found by a passer-by has prompted questions about the potential risks posed by the lapse. Firearms left unattended in a public setting could have been accessed by others before being reported.

In this case, the individual who found the bag alerted the authorities, allowing officers to recover the items without further incident. There have been no reports of injuries or misuse of the weapons.

Policing bodies in the United Kingdom operate under strict regulations regarding the deployment and security of firearms. Authorised officers undergo specialised training and are expected to follow procedures designed to minimise risk to the public.

Incidents involving misplaced or unsecured weapons are uncommon but are treated with seriousness when they occur. They can lead to reviews of operational practices and, in some cases, changes to procedures.

Investigation to determine accountability and next steps

The Metropolitan Police has indicated that the current investigation will focus on establishing a clear timeline of events, including how the bag came to be left behind and whether existing procedures were followed.

As part of this process, investigators may examine body-worn camera footage, vehicle logs and communications records. Officers involved are likely to be interviewed as part of the inquiry.

The force has not set out a timetable for the conclusion of the investigation. Until it is completed, the officers will remain off duty.

In recent years, police forces across the United Kingdom have faced increased scrutiny over conduct and standards. Incidents involving equipment or public safety are often subject to both internal review and external oversight, depending on their nature.

For now, the focus remains on determining how the lapse occurred and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to prevent a recurrence.

Yet another example of pathetic behaviour by the British police FARCE! So glad I spent my time serving in the Rhodesian police, the BSAP, who were joint number 1 in the world with the Hong Kong police at the time!
