La Nogalera plaza in Torremolinos is approaching its concluding stage after months of intensive redevelopment. Everyone can already enjoy expanded pedestrian areas during ongoing improvements to this bustling central space.
The overhaul has shifted emphasis from hard surfaces towards inviting water features, shaded zones, and flowing organic curves. These elements introduce dynamism and lightness while creating a refreshing and more welcoming environment.
Budget adjustment reflects technical challenges under busy square
Officials recently approved a budget increase of nearly 20 per cent to the original allocation. Additional costs reached around €600,000, bringing the total investment to €3.6 million.
Several unforeseen factors were behind the revision. Constraints on heavy machinery arose due to the underlying railway tunnel vault, while engineers needed to reroute an unexpected medium-voltage electricity line. Further modifications included refined gradients, full removal of architectural barriers for universal accessibility, adaptation of buried services, and revised foundations plus ornamental details.
Construction is now expected to be complete after 19 months instead of the initial seven months and one week. If timelines hold, the square should open fully around May 2026.
Council stress quality and public benefit foremost
Improvements to make sure complete accessibility, improved safety, and immediate usability while preventing future issues have been at the heart of the redesign. Planners minimised disruption to surrounding shops and tourism, vital drivers of the local economy.
Council sources say that complex urban projects often reveal new technical requirements during execution. Design highlights include an 11-metre programmable digital water curtain reaching seven metres in height, complemented by integrated benches. Nearby, a playful dry fountain with interactive jets sits close to Calle San Miguel for family enjoyment.
Pergolas equipped with renewable energy systems will combat urban heat island effects and support self-sufficient power for lighting and management. Planners ruled out large trees because of the square’s position directly above the railway vault.
Torremolinos advances urban renewal on Costa del Sol
This regeneration strengthens La Nogalera as a flagship project, delivering a contemporary, inclusive plaza suited to a vibrant coastal destination. Pedestrians already experience glimpses of the future layout, promising refreshed appeal for residents and holidaymakers.
