Tourism officials in southern Spain are celebrating low-cost airline Wizz Air for its strong commitment to the region and its bets on the Costa del Sol’s continued expansion. During a recent press breakfast in Malaga, Antonio Díaz, managing director of Turismo Costa del Sol, stressed how improved air connections are the main driver behind visitor numbers and open fresh markets.

Strategic focus on air routes increasing visitors and destinations

Air connectivity remains a main priority for the Costa del Sol. Díaz explained that partnerships with carriers such as Wizz Air help diversify source countries other than the established traditional ones and strengthen the Costa del Sol’s global appeal. Officials view this approach as essential for steady tourism expansion in the province of Malaga.

New opportunities are arising in countries with rising travel demand such as Albania, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, Lithuania and Romania. This broader reach is supporting a balanced development and reducing reliance on any single origin.

Malaga Airport prepares for peak period with 8.5% capacity rise

Projections for the coming half-year show positive trends at Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport. Seat availability will increase by 8.5 per cent to around 9.6 million places. International arrivals will continue to lead arrivals, backed by mature European countries and gradual gains from newer markets. Low-cost operators are expected to play a major role in this capacity build-up.

Wizz Air leads growth among the top ten airlines at the airport. Its seat offer will rise by 47.5 per cent over the same period last year, while full-year capacity will grow 25 per cent. Combined operations from Wizz Air, Wizz Air Malta and Wizz Air UK will provide nearly half a million seats in the next six months. Routes are gaining strength to Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary and Lithuania, with added frequencies to Italian cities like Milan and Rome; Polish departure points; and Romanian airports, including Bucharest and Cluj.

Joint efforts hope to create new travel opportunities

Díaz highlighted coordinated work through a connectivity group involving Turespaña, AENA, Malaga Airport, the Andalucian regional government, Malaga Council and Turismo y Planificación Costa del Sol. This teamwork encourages fresh routes and better frequencies on existing services.

Tourism Costa del Sol plans to maintain close ties with airlines. Support will target both high-performing links and those needing extra promotion. “Work will continue to strengthen connections and generate fresh business for the Costa del Sol,” Díaz stated at the event.
