The football match between UD Almería and Málaga CF got off to an explosive start on Sunday, April 19. Before the red-and-whites even took to the field, fans outside the stadium were fighting each other black and blue.

Prior to kick-off, supporters gathered outside to welcome their respective teams but the atmosphere quickly turned hostile when clashes broke out between rival groups. Almería and Málaga fans began physically assaulting each other, with reports of cups and other objects being thrown during the disorder.

Despite the build-up to the fixture being labelled high risk, tensions escalated faster than anticipated in the areas surrounding the stadium, where separation between opposing supporters was limited.

Police intervention and rapid arrests

National Police officers, who had already been deployed in anticipation of possible trouble, moved in quickly to break up the altercation. Authorities had previously identified individuals considered capable of provoking disorder, which helped speed up the response once violence erupted.

Five fans were arrested in total during the incidents. Four of those detained were Málaga supporters, while the fifth was an Almería fan. The Almería supporter reportedly lost consciousness during the arrest and was later taken to hospital for treatment.

Security concerns and scrutiny over policing

The events have led to renewed scrutiny of security arrangements around high-risk fixtures in Spanish football. While the police presence prevented the violence from escalating further, concerns have been raised about crowd segregation and whether enough was done to keep rival supporters apart before kick-off.

The National Police have also faced further scrutiny for their arrest techniques as images of half a dozen officers restraining the unconscious suspect were shared online. Meanwhile, observers in attendance noted the limited physical separation between fan groups in the build-up to the match, which may have contributed to the speed at which tensions escalated.

Legal consequences for detained supporters

In the days following the incident, further developments emerged regarding those arrested. Reports indicate that four of the Málaga supporters involved have accepted legal consequences relating to their participation in the disturbances. This follows procedures linked to fast-track agreements in cases involving public disorder.

The fifth individual, the Almería fan who was hospitalised, was also included in the broader investigation into the incidents outside the stadium.

Match proceeds amid disruption

Despite the pre-match violence, the fixture itself went ahead as planned. UD Almería went onto win the match against Málaga with a decisive header goal in the 90th minute taking the score to 3-2 and keeping the home teams dream of promotion alive.
