Five Murcian municipalities will get their time in the spotlight with the exciting new filming of a Movistar Plus+ original series, “Todo lo necesario” (“All That’s Necessary”), in collaboration with Lastor Media. The series, which will have three episodes, is a thriller inspired by the negotiations for the release of three Spanish aid workers kidnapped on the border between Mali and Mauritania by Al Qaeda in 2009.
The Costa Calida becomes a hotspot filming location for new series
The filming is being organised by the Region of Murcia Film Commission under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports. The series will film in various locations in five Costa Calida municipalities, including Abanilla, Cartagena, La Union, Mazarron and Ulea.
The creators of the series are Marcel Barrena and Alberto Marini. Mr Barrena is responsible for hit audiovisual works including The 47 and Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea, whereas co-creator Marini created Marbella and La Unidad. Together, the duo are teaming up to create what is sure to be a hit series in Spain, headlined by a star-studded cast that includes actors like David Verdaguer, Enric Auquer, Marina Salas and Mónica López.
A collaboration that will visit several locations in Spain
In addition to the Region of Murcia, this audiovisual work is also being filmed in locations in Africa, Senegal, and the Catalan capital of Barcelona.
The Region of Murcia Film Commission has been collaborating with the project since October 2025, and the various locations in the region have been thoroughly scouted and carefully chosen in order to recreate some of the areas where the plot will take place.
This thriller will have a complex political element to it, delving into the negotiations for the release of the aid workers, tension amid families, the hostages’ story as they struggle to survive, the plans to locate and rescue them, and the moral dilemma posed by this 267-day captivity.
