Passengers arriving at Palma airport late on Sunday, May 17, found themselves caught in scenes of confusion and frustration after a long delay left travellers trapped inside a disembarkation area without information.

The incident happened following a flight arriving from Valencia. According to eyewitnesses, tensions escalated after passengers were forced to remain inside an airport corridor for an extended period with little communication from staff regarding the delay or when they would be allowed to leave.

At one point, one traveller reportedly forced open an access door leading further into Son Sant Joan airport in an attempt to escape the crowded waiting area.

Many of those onboard were supporters of RCD Mallorca returning from the team’s away match against Levante UD.

Witnesses described growing frustration among exhausted passengers, with several blaming ongoing construction works and coordination issues during the disembarkation process for the disruption.

Although no injuries were reported and airport access was restored shortly afterwards, the incident once again highlighted mounting operational pressure at Palma airport ahead of the busy summer tourism season.

Concerns grow ahead of summer season

In recent weeks, Palma airport has already experienced disruption linked to strikes, overcrowding concerns and preparations for the new EU Entry/Exit System expected to affect border control procedures.

Some travellers have reported waiting several hours during peak periods as passenger numbers continue increasing rapidly.

Palma airport remains one of Spain’s busiest transport hubs during the summer months, handling millions of tourists travelling to Mallorca from across Europe.

Authorities and airport operators are continuing preparations for another record tourism season while attempting to manage increasing passenger flows and ongoing infrastructure works.

For many passengers caught in Sunday’s disruption, the incident raised fresh concerns about how the airport will cope once peak summer traffic fully begins in the coming weeks.
