Almuñecar is mourning the loss of veteran teacher Juan del Valle, who died suddenly on Puerta del Mar beach on Tuesday, June 2 in the afternoon. The well‑known educator, who would have turned 80 in August, was a familiar face in the community and a respected figure across several local schools.
Emergency response on Puerta del Mar beach
The incident occurred at around 2pm while Juan del Valle was bathing at the popular Almuñecar beach he frequented. According to local reports, he collapsed in the water for reasons that remain unknown. A woman who was also on the beach immediately began resuscitation efforts, which were then supported by Local Police officers using a defibrillator.
Despite prolonged attempts to revive him, he could not be saved. His body was later transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute of Granada, where the cause of death will be formally determined by the forensic doctor.
A respected teacher and former head of CEIP Rio Verde
Juan del Valle’s career spanned several decades and left a lasting mark on generations of students. He began teaching at CEIP La Santa Cruz before moving to CEIP Rio Verde, where he later became a popular headteacher. His leadership at Rio Verde was recently recognised during the school’s 40th anniversary celebrations, where he was honoured for his contribution to its development and identity.
He concluded his professional life at IES Puerta del Mar, joining the secondary school during its early years and helping to shape its educational foundations. Colleagues remember him as a dedicated teacher with a calm presence and a strong commitment to his pupils.
After retiring, he remained an active and sociable member of the community. He regularly attended gatherings with fellow retired teachers, including weekly meals with his Peña, a long‑standing circle of friends. Known for his warm personality, he was regarded as a true Sexitano, deeply rooted in the town’s social and cultural life.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of affection from former students, neighbours and friends who remember him as a kind, approachable and much‑loved figure.
