Travellers heading between Spain and Asia will soon have a major new option, with Singapore Airlines announcing the launch of flights to Madrid as part of a significant expansion of its European network.
The airline will begin operating services to the Spanish capital from October 26, 2026, marking its return to Madrid after more than two decades away. The new route will connect Singapore and Madrid via Barcelona, giving passengers greater access between Spain, Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.
Madrid joins expanding network
Singapore Airlines said Madrid will become its 15th European destination and only its second destination in Spain, alongside Barcelona. The move reflects growing demand for travel between Europe and Asia as international tourism and business travel continue to recover strongly.
The service is scheduled to operate five times a week using the airline’s Airbus A350-900 long-haul aircraft. Flights will depart Singapore, stop briefly in Barcelona and then continue on to Madrid. The return journey will follow the same routing.
For travellers in Spain, the new connection opens up easier access to destinations across Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand through Singapore’s award-winning Changi Airport hub. For visitors from Asia, it provides another gateway into Spain, one of Europe’s most popular tourism markets.
What the new route means for Spain
The launch comes at a time when Madrid is experiencing strong international growth, with airlines continuing to add new routes and increase capacity. The city has become an increasingly important hub for both tourism and business travel, attracting millions of international visitors each year.
Industry observers believe the route could help strengthen economic and tourism ties between Spain and Singapore, while also making it easier for Spanish travellers to explore destinations across Asia without relying on multiple airline connections.
Wider European expansion
Madrid is not the only destination benefiting from Singapore Airlines’ latest growth plans. The carrier is also increasing frequencies to several major European cities, including Manchester, Milan, Munich and London Gatwick, as demand for long-haul travel continues to rise.
Tickets for the Madrid route are expected to go on sale during June, ahead of the inaugural flight in October. The airline says the expansion is designed to improve connectivity across its global network while offering passengers more choice and flexibility.
For Spain, the arrival of one of the world’s most highly regarded airlines represents another boost for international connectivity and further reinforces Madrid’s growing position as a global aviation hub.
