Spain’s Ministry of Transport has officially confirmed the fourth edition of the Verano Joven (Youth Summer) discount programme, an initiative designed for young people in the country to travel more during the summer, particularly using high-speed trains. The programme, designed for young people between the ages of 18 and 30, offers discounts of up to 90 per cent on train and bus journeys during the summer.

Which discounts are being offered?

The discounts being offered by the Ministry of Tourism in this edition of the Verano Joven initiative do not differ from previous years. These are:

  • 90 per cent discount for regular state-run bus services.
  • 90 per cent discount on conventional medium-distance services and on the narrow-gauge network.
  • 50 per cent discount on Avant high-speed train single tickets.
  • 50 per cent discount, up to a maximum of €30 per ticket, for long-distance or high-speed commercial services of all railway operators.
  • 50 per cent discount on the 10-day Interrail Global Flexible pass within 2 months, when purchased through Renfe. This discount applies to official Interrail fares, including age-based pricing, etc.

Who can benefit from Verano Joven?

The discounts are available for individuals born between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 2008, meaning those between 18 and 30 years old.

Spain’s Ministry of Transport estimates that, with these discounts, a group of six friends planning a trip together to the beach by bus could save up to €300.

What dates can I book my trip and which operators are participating?

The Verano Joven discounts will be eligible for trips taking place between July 1 and September 30, 2026.

All major national transport operators will be participating in the discount programme, including Renfe, Ouigo, Iryo, Interrail, Alsa, Grupo Avanza, and select lines of Interbus. Young people will also be able to use it when booking their trips through select apps, including Trainline and Omio.

Young people in Spain are also advised to keep a sharp lookout on official transport operators’ pages and social media for announcements of discounts, new information regarding the Verano Joven programme, and special deals and communications.

How do I get my Verano Joven discount?

As in previous editions, young people can register for their Verano Joven discount using their national identity card, or DNI/NIE; foreign resident’s card, or TIE; or passport information. Spain’s Ministry of Transport will soon launch a page on its official website where young people can put in their information and register, at which point the Verano Joven arrives to them in the form of a discount code that they can use while booking their trips through various operators.

It is notable that young people should register for the discount at least 24 hours before trying to book their trip.

The impact of Verano Joven: Travelling, economy, and tourism

In addition to making it easier and more affordable for the young people in Spain to travel and get to know different parts of the country, the programme promotes the use of public transport and boosts the tourism sector as a whole.

Since the first launch of the programme in 2023, more than 4 million young people in the country have benefited from discounts on more than 16 million trips.
