LEGO has unveiled its largest architecture set to date, a highly detailed recreation of Barcelona’s world-famous Sagrada Família Basilica. The model contains an impressive 12,060 pieces and captures many of the intricate towers, facades and architectural details that have made Antoni Gaudí’s unfinished masterpiece one of Spain’s most visited landmarks.
However, while fans have praised the design, many have been left stunned by the price tag.
The set is expected to retail for around €749.99 when it launches in November, making it one of the most expensive LEGO products ever released.
Fans react to the price tag
Excitement quickly turned to debate across LEGO forums and social media as fans digested the cost.
Reddit user DualMoldingSucks summed up the feelings of many collectors, writing: “$200 more than it was previously said to be, which is a bummer.” Another commenter added: “I cannot justify the price.”
Others compared the set with recent large-scale releases.
One fan wrote: “It’s big but it’s not even close to the size it should be for the price. Minas Tirith is 650 for essentially the same dimensions.”
Despite concerns over value, many were keen to stress that the design itself was impressive.
“The designer(s) did an excellent job and the detail is absolutely incredible. But I would easily take Minas Tirith over this,” one Reddit user commented.
Redditor beesandcheese was among those who admitted they had been tempted before the final price was revealed, writing: “Oof I don’t know. I was all in at $650. $800 is really tough. That’s absurd.”
Memes steal the spotlight
As often happens with major LEGO launches, the internet quickly responded with humour.
One widely shared meme joked that for the cost of the set, a fan would rather buy a flight to Spain and see the real Sagrada Família in person. The joke resonated with many Europeans, who pointed out that budget flights to Barcelona can often cost less than the price of the model.
Another viral post featured a fan claiming they would leave the build unfinished and force future generations of their family to complete it.
The joke references the real Sagrada Família, which remains under construction more than 140 years after work began in 1882. Although significant progress has been made, the basilica has become famous worldwide for its extraordinarily long construction timeline.
Some commenters even joked that LEGO builders should follow the example of the real structure and avoid finishing the model for another century.
A masterpiece with a premium price
Despite the backlash, there is little disagreement about the quality of the finished product.
The model recreates the basilica’s distinctive skyline with remarkable accuracy and has been praised as one of the most ambitious architecture releases LEGO has ever produced.
For architecture enthusiasts and dedicated collectors, it could become a centrepiece display model. However, with a price approaching €800, many fans appear to be wrestling with the same question: is it a dream set worth owning, or simply too expensive to justify?
For now, the verdict from many LEGO enthusiasts seems clear – the building may be sky-high, but so is the price tag.
