A British tourist around 50 years old required intensive care after debris from a collapsing ninth-floor balcony struck him in a hotel swimming pool area in Murcia province on June 12.

Multiple calls reached emergency services around 7.37pm as a cornice detached from the four-star Izan Cavanna Hotel in Cartagena Province. Debris fell directly into the pool, knocking the man unconscious. Paramedics provided immediate treatment before transporting him to Virgen de la Arrixaca University Clinical Hospital, where doctors admitted him to intensive care. Firefighters cordoned off below the facade, cleared rubble and closed two rooms as a precaution while an architect inspected the extent of visible damage not apparent at first sight. Urban planning authorities plan to release full findings next week.
Hotel faces questions over past safety issues
Guests at this same property went through a massive salmonella outbreak in August 2025. Nearly 200 guests reported symptoms of gastroenteritis after meals, with around 20 people hospitalised, including a 15-month-old baby. Management eventually released a statement expressing regret and confirming cooperation with health officials while prioritising guest welfare. No public response has appeared yet regarding the recent structural failure of the building.
Similar collapses cause worries about tourist accommodation safety
Several incidents this year point to ongoing risks in some popular Spanish coastal resorts, including Alicante and Mallorca. Seven people sustained injuries at Poseidon Palace Hotel in Benidorm during Easter Sunday lunch on April 5 of this year when sections of plasterboard ceiling and air conditioning ducts crashed onto about 60 diners. Those affected ranged from an eight-year-old child to individuals in their seventies and eighties. A council architect examined the three-star property afterwards.
Only days later, on April 9, part of a dining room floor gave way at the Zafiro Rey Don Jaime Hotel in Santa Ponsa, Mallorca, around 9.30pm. Two guests suffered minor injuries while roughly 70 to 150 people were evacuated from the area. Officials ordered a temporary closure for thorough structural checks amid concerns over ageing infrastructure.
Coastal hotels often face accelerated wear from salt air and heavy tourist use, leading experts to call for stricter maintenance schedules and regular building evaluations. These events arrive as many properties date from decades ago when construction standards differed.
