Spain has long been a dream destination for overseas property buyers, particularly those looking for sunshine, a relaxed lifestyle and a place to retire. However, rising property prices, increasing costs and changing personal circumstances are causing some people to think twice.

For some, the answer remains a resounding yes. Jage Pandhal was among those who expressed confidence in the Spanish property market, saying: “Yes!! And many more!! Best investment for generations!” Others who already own property in Spain remain positive despite some challenges. Andy McCluskey commented: “Have one for the past 7 years, it can be difficult with bureaucracy at times but worth the occasional hassle.”

However, rising house prices were a major concern for many. Doris Chaudoit Frikke explained: “Prices have gone up so much that we couldn’t afford to buy our house today. Luckily, we bought it 13 years ago.” Sue Jones shared a similar story: “We always had the idea of moving to Spain to retire. Kept an eye on the housing market for years. Numerous trips over to look at areas. Now we have reached that time, alas the house prices have gone up so much that we had to look elsewhere.”

For some, the issue is not whether to buy, but whether it makes financial sense to move within the market. Angela Dawn Ovenden said: “Buy absolutely but to sell and buy is a big fat no as the costs involved are extortionate.” Her comments reflect concerns about transaction costs, which can significantly increase the expense of changing properties.

Others suggested alternative approaches. Debbie Black wrote: “We are in our late 70s and living in our own home in Spain. At some stage the upkeep will become too much. We would rent rather than buy now.” Meanwhile, Phil Williams has chosen a completely different route to buying or renting: “I’ll just use my camper van for 3 months at a time less stress, less taxation, cheaper and I’ll get to travel and see much more of Spain than I would if I just had a Spanish property.”

Overall, most people said they would still buy a home in Spain, or were pleased they had already done so. However, many also pointed to rising property prices, high transaction costs and changing lifestyles as important factors that could influence that decision today.
