Six Murcia municipalities and 700 establishments to compete for coveted Green Flag this summer « Euro Weekly News
The Region of Murcia is showing up to support the planet with a healthy competitive spirit, as six of its municipalities and nearly 700 hoteliers will participate to win Ecovidrio’s Green Flag for sustainability this summer. This year marks the seventh edition of the recycling competition, and the stakes are high for the municipalities as last year, Mazarron emerged as the winner of the Green Flags.
What is the Ecovidrio Green Flag for sustainability, and how to participate?
The competition focuses specifically on the recycling of glass containers in each municipality, with a special focus on hospitality establishments. To participate, all residents and visitors need to do is recycle glass containers in the marked Ecovidrio recycling bins.
Ecovidrio will also recognise the most responsible and sustainable hospitality establishment in Murcia, judging by factors including its waste recycling management, energy, and water consumption, as well as the sustainability of its purchasing. Last year’s recipient was Restaurante CP8, located in Cabo de Palos.
Which municipalities will be taking part in the competition?
This year, the municipalities of Aguilas, Los Alcazares, Cartagena, Mazarron, San Javier, and San Pedro del Pinatar will compete to win the coveted “Green Flag of Sustainability” from Ecovidrio. Additionally, apart from the award of the flag itself, the municipalities in each autonomous community that have obtained the highest score will be rewarded with an awareness day event in their municipalities, offering a fun social event for residents and visitors to take part in.
Spain’s nationwide contest: Friendly competition between communities, all to help the environment
On a national scale, more than 120 municipalities and more than 12,000 restaurants, bars and beach bars will join the Green Flags Movement this year. These municipalities will be competing to see if they can not only beat each other out for their recycling records, but beat their previous records in the last edition of the competition.
In Murcia in particular, more than 2,100 tonnes of glass containers were collected and recycled in the 2025 edition of Ecovidrio’s Green Flag for sustainability competition.
