Homeowners living in the Murcia countryside, Alejandro and Andrea, sprang into action recently after hearing the desperate cries of a dog near their home. The two off-duty Guardia Civil officers rushed to a nearby irrigation ditch where they discovered a distressed dog in immediate peril.
Brutal abandonment method shocks locals
Fuera de servicio, los guardias civiles Alejandro y Andrea escucharon ladridos en una acequia de Murcia.
Al llegar, hallaron a una perrita atada con bridas y un ladrillo para evitar que se moviera.

The Guardia Civil’s branch that deals with the welfare of animals, SEPRONA, has confirmed the animal had zip-ties fastened tightly around it, and a heavy brick which served as a weight to stop any escape from the water. The officers managed to free the distressed dog from this life-threatening setup during their off-duty hours. The Guardia Civil later shared rescue footage across social platforms to raise awareness, and indignation, about the incident.
Couple responds to cries for help
Rapid intervention by Alejandro and Andrea made sure the animal reached safety without delay. The dog is now said to appear healthy after this timely rescue effort.
Investigators continue to examine circumstances around this abandonment case in the Murcia region. Details remain scarce regarding the precise rescue location or full veterinary assessment beyond confirmation of the dog’s improved condition. Local public appeals are seeking information that might identify those responsible for leaving the animal in such torturous conditions.
Alejandro (the Guardia Civil rescuer) has publicly suggested someone is throwing dogs from a car with “total impunity” in this quiet country spot. Alejandro has reportedly saved four other dogs in the last eight months from the same acequia in Llano de Brujas, all showing similar abandonment methods (tied and weighted to drown). This has led to public speculation about a possible serial animal abuser operating in the area, with the Guardia Civil investigating.
Broader concerns over animal welfare
Similar incidents in rural areas have drawn attention to continuing issues with pet abandonment across Spain. This event goes to show there still is everyday heroism from law enforcement members who protect animals even when not on active duty. Communities express hope for quick identification of any perpetrators involved in the cruel act.
Many residents have been praising the officers’ dedication in saving the dog since the video has gone viral on Spanish networks. The Guardia Civil are still calling on anyone with relevant details to come forward and assist with their investigations.
