A new community theatre group in the Almanzora Valley has enjoyed a highly successful debut while raising valuable funds for a local animal charity.

The Almanzora Players Amateur Society (T.A.P.A.S.), a cooperative community theatre group based in the Almanzora Valley and surrounding area, staged its first production, The Cat and The Canary, on Sunday 14 June. The live radio play adaptation by David Muncaster was a sell-out success, delighting audiences with its humour and entertaining mishaps as the cast battled through a comedy of errors to deliver the performance.

Charity fundraising success

Formed by local theatre enthusiasts, TAPAS brings together people with a shared passion for the performing arts and a desire to raise awareness and raise money for charities across the Almanzora Valley.

The group’s first production raised more than €1,125 for the Animal Protection Society of Albox (APSA). APSA is dedicated to improving the lives of abandoned and neglected animals throughout the region and relies heavily on donations and community support. The impressive fundraising total highlights the positive impact local arts initiatives can have when combined with charitable causes.

Growing opportunities for local performers

Director Adam Markillie-Mallinson said the group is growing rapidly and welcomes anyone interested in performing or helping behind the scenes.

He explained that T.A.P.A.S. is a fast-growing international group of performers and volunteers, and there are opportunities both on stage and in the many supporting roles required to make productions happen successfully. The group is already planning future performances and hopes to continue supporting other local charities through community theatre.

Meet and mingle event in Arboleas

To encourage new members and supporters, T.A.P.A.S. will be holding a Meet and Mingle event at Al Arbuli in Arboleas on Wednesday 8 July 2026 at 1.30pm.

The event will provide an opportunity to learn more about future productions, discuss plans for the group, and meet others who are interested in taking part or offering support. Whether you have experience in acting, stage management, production, costume design, marketing or simply wish to help with fundraising activities, everyone is welcome to attend.
