Residents of Almuñecar woke on San Juan morning to devastating news of a young foreigner’s death after a fall from a rooftop terrace near Paseo del Altillo. The incident cast a sombre tone over celebrations that had started with typical summer festivity across the Costa Tropical.
Shock hits Almuñecar during festivities
San Juan had begun with the usual atmosphere of joy for everyone in the town. News of the fatality spread rapidly through the first hours of the day and stunned those enjoying the area. Paseo del Altillo ranks among the town’s busiest spots at this time of year, drawing crowds for seasonal activities and gatherings. What happened turned a day of summertime tradition into one marked by grief instead.
The victim, a foreigner who had not yet reached 18 and held residence permission in a Granada metropolitan area town, had rented a flat locally with friends. Reports suggest the group spent time on the terrace following night-time festivities.
Fatal plunge from seventh-floor terrace
A member of the public raised the alarm with an emergency 112 call just after 8am upon finding the young man on the ground in Calle Helga Shonel. Emergency operators dispatched Guardia Civil units, local police officers and medical responders to the scene. Personnel on arrival established that death had occurred.
Accounts describe the young man having fallen from a rooftop terrace at seventh-floor level. Witnesses refer to damage left to the 6th floor railings suggesting that the boy had been attempting to climb from the 6th floor balcony to the rooftop before he fell to his death in the street below. Officers cordoned off the area while the body underwent removal for transfer to Granada’s Institute of Legal Medicine.
Guardia Civil investigation underway
Guardia Civil teams examined the building and surrounding area before launching a full inquiry into the circumstances. Judicial police managed initial formalities. A post-mortem examination at the Granada facility will help determine the precise cause of the incident.
Officials have not yet released further information on what led to the fall. The probe continues with evidence collection from the property and statements from those present. Authorities are expected to provide fresh details in the coming hours after completing key steps and issuing official updates.
The local community expressed widespread dismay at the loss during what should have been a day of celebration.
