Three Irish tourists killed in devastating Málaga motorway crash

The fatal collision happened in the early hours of Sunday June 28, on the A-7 motorway near Málaga, one of the country’s busiest coastal routes. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 2.38am after two vehicles collided close to the Cerrado de Calderón exit.

Car plunged around 30 metres down embankment

According to Spanish emergency services, one of the vehicles left the carriageway after the impact and plunged around 30 metres down a steep embankment, crashing through trees before coming to rest in a street below.

Firefighters, police officers and paramedics launched a major rescue operation, working to reach those trapped inside the wreckage.

Three people, two women and one man, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 35-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Málaga’s Regional University Hospital for treatment. A 64-year-old woman was also treated at the scene for injuries. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether all three fatalities were travelling in the same vehicle.

Irish authorities supporting families

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is aware of the tragedy and is providing consular assistance to the families affected.

In a statement, the department said it does not comment publicly on the details of individual consular cases but confirmed officials are in contact with those involved.

The identities of those who died have not yet been officially released.

Investigation underway

Spain’s Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision to establish exactly what caused the crash.

The A-7, which runs along much of Spain’s Mediterranean coastline, is one of the country’s busiest motorways and carries significant volumes of local, commuter and tourist traffic throughout the year.

The fatal accident caused major disruption while emergency crews recovered the vehicles and cleared the scene.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through both Spain and Ireland, particularly as thousands of Irish holidaymakers are currently travelling to the Costa del Sol for the summer season. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to examine factors including the circumstances leading up to the collision, road conditions and the movements of both vehicles before the impact.
