Palma is preparing to welcome one of the world’s largest cruise ships when Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas makes its inaugural visit to the island on July 8, adding another high-profile arrival to Mallorca’s increasingly impressive list of super-sized vessels.

The 365-metre-long ship is currently making its maiden Mediterranean voyage after departing Málaga, with scheduled stops in Tarragona and La Spezia before arriving in Palma. Carrying more than 5,600 passengers and around 2,350 crew, the floating resort is among the biggest cruise ships ever built and marks another milestone in the island’s status as one of the Mediterranean’s leading cruise destinations.

Palma’s growing reputation

While the arrival of Legend of the Seas is attracting attention, Palma has become no stranger to hosting some of the world’s most spectacular vessels.

The port regularly welcomes Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas, MSC’s MSC Grandiosa, and AIDA Cruises’ AIDAcosma, each capable of carrying thousands of passengers. Luxury cruise lines including Silversea, Regent Seven Seas and Explora Journeys also make frequent calls, bringing a mix of high-end travellers to the island throughout the summer season. Cruise schedules show July will be one of the busiest months of the year, with several days seeing multiple large ships berthed simultaneously.

Away from the cruise terminal, Palma has also become a favourite destination for some of the world’s most recognisable superyachts. Throughout each summer, billionaire-owned vessels regularly anchor in the Bay of Palma or berth at the marina, while the annual Palma International Boat Show showcases dozens of luxury yachts measuring more than 24 metres.

A boost for tourism

Cruise arrivals remain an important part of Mallorca’s tourism industry, bringing thousands of visitors into the city to explore its historic centre, shops, restaurants and attractions.

For many passengers aboard Legend of the Seas, Palma will offer their first glimpse of Mallorca before the ship continues its Mediterranean itinerary. With its combination of world-class marina facilities, modern cruise infrastructure and easy access to the city’s landmarks, the island continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Europe’s premier cruise destinations.
