Those looking for genuine cultural immersion in Costa del Sol culture will find rich rewards in Los Boliches this summer. Local people in Fuengirola cling onto deep connections to their seafaring past through living demonstrations that bring history to life on the beach.

Ancient fishing methods come alive once more

Every year residents organise a special recreation of the tirada del copo on July 11 at Los Boliches beach. This event honours generations of families who depended on the sea for their livelihood along the Costa del Sol. Starting at 8am, before it gets too hot, participants will gather between Varadero and the chiringuito Los Naufragos to recreate the historic technique.

Teams will throw out a net around 50 metres offshore before hauling it back to shore using long ropes. Fish caught inside the bag of the net provide a vivid glimpse into centuries-old practices that shaped daily life here before all the tall buildings arrived. The local council works closely with the Peña Recreativa Bolichera to stage this authentic display.

Strong community ties to the sea

People in this part of Fuengirola carry forward stories of hard work and resilience from their ancestors. Everyone feels the strong bond between the neighbourhood and its seafaring roots during these moments.

Organisers revived the tradition in 1995 as part of the celebrations for the fair in honour of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the patron saint of Los Boliches. Annual performances now take place each July and again on August 15, drawing crowds who appreciate this distinctive element of local identity.

Perfect opportunity for memorable visitor experiences

Visitors can get direct insight into Fuengirola’s coastal heritage when they attend this engaging spectacle. Proper permissions from the Junta de Andalucia make sure all fish return to the sea straight away, allowing the demonstration to continue responsibly. Families, couples and solo travellers discover something special when they witness locals working together with skill and enthusiasm.

Many visitors leave with lasting memories of community spirit and cultural continuity. Experiences like this create deeper appreciation for Spanish coastal towns that value their past. Attendees connect with authentic practices that continue to define daily pride in Fuengirola.

This July event offers an ideal chance to explore traditions that locals hold dear. Planning a trip around the date promises rewarding encounters with genuine heritage and warm hospitality.
