Two of Calpe’s busiest seafront promenades have secured almost €279,000 in European funding after extensive restoration work aimed at improving safety and preserving the town’s coastline.

The rehabilitation projects along La Fossa and Arenal-Bol promenades have been officially included in the Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan (PSTD), meaning they will be fully financed through the European Union’s Next Generation funds as part of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. The announcement was made by Calpe Town Hall this week.

The combined investment totals €278,855.95 and covers repairs that were completed over recent months on two of the municipality’s most heavily used waterfront areas.

Storm damage repaired at La Fossa

A significant part of the funding has gone towards restoring a section of the stone seawall on the La Fossa promenade after it suffered serious damage during storms in August 2024.

The affected stretch, between markers M-61 and M-63, experienced a partial collapse of the retaining wall and damage to the surrounding pavement. The repair project, costing €120,244.67, rebuilt the structure and strengthened the area to improve safety for residents and the thousands of visitors who use the promenade throughout the year.

Arenal-Bol improvements completed

Meanwhile, €158,611.28 has been invested in upgrading the Arenal-Bol promenade.

The works included resurfacing sections of the promenade, reinforcing the existing stone wall and replacing damaged coping stones that had deteriorated over time. Together, the two projects are intended to improve the appearance, accessibility and long-term resilience of Calpe’s seafront while supporting its tourism infrastructure.

More projects also benefit

The latest funding announcement also provides support for several additional tourism-related initiatives in Calpe.

While construction of the planned Museu de la Festa will not receive EU funding because the building works extend beyond the programme deadline, €46,787.58 has been approved towards preparing the project’s design documentation. The town council has already committed its own funds to complete the museum’s construction.

Other projects set to receive Next Generation support include plans for new public Wi-Fi points, environmentally friendly boat moorings, improvements to the cycle lane along Avenida de los Ejércitos Españoles and technical work linked to future public space upgrades.

The investment forms part of wider efforts to modernise Calpe’s tourist infrastructure while protecting some of the Costa Blanca resort’s most important coastal areas for years to come.
