Life in Mazarron has finally returned to normal and local heroes are being praised following a tense weekend wildfire that broke out in the Sierra de Las Moreras, requiring the intervention of more than 100 first responders. The blaze, which ignited on Saturday, July 11, shook nearby communities and forced the evacuation of some 23 people, but was finally controlled and fully extinguished by midday on Sunday, marking an extraordinary effort by the brave firefighting personnel.

Emergency teams deploy massive response to contain the flames

The fire began in a ravine between Bolnuevo and Cañada de Gallego, in the municipality of Mazarron. It was exacerbated by the incredible heat and dry conditions of the scrublands, spreading across more than six hectares of land. The Region of Murcia’s emergency services swiftly jumped into action, given the fire’s close proximity to residential areas and popular beaches in the municipality.

Strategic aerial attack targets inaccessible mountain terrain

More than 100 personnel, including specialised forestry brigades, environmental agents, local firefighters, Civil Protection, the Guardia Civil, and the Mazarron Local Police, were dispatched to the scene. In order to fight the blaze, emergency responders used a mix of ground and air support, including the deployment of four aircraft. Three helicopter crews were sent to fight the fire on the mountain’s summit, an area that the ground teams were unable to access.

Precautionary evacuations to protect residents and holidaymakers

Around 23 people were evacuated as a precaution, including both local residents and holidaymakers from the Punta Vela area and beachgoers enjoying the nearby coves of Bolnuevo. The evacuation efforts were coordinated by the Mazarron Town Hall’s Civil Protection and Social Services departments, as well as the Red Cross global humanitarian network. Local residents later stated they felt safe when they saw the effort of the first responders and evacuation teams.

Thanks to these brave efforts, the coordination, and the swift response by the teams, this massive fire was brought under control by the small hours of Sunday morning and officially extinguished by the afternoon.

Rapid coordination averts major environmental and community crisis

After the fire was put under control, the coves of Bolnuevo were promptly reopened to the public, and evacuees were safely assisted back to their homes or temporary accommodations. While regional government officials have confirmed that the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, the rapid and coordinated response averted what could have been a much more devastating environmental and community crisis, and highlighted the brave action taken by the emergency response teams to help keep local residents – and the environment – safe from the threat of wildfires.
