Almuñecar’s surfboard showers attract fresh attention

Colourful surfboard-shaped showers installed on beaches across Almuñecar and La Herradura are attracting fresh attention this summer, several years after they first appeared on the Costa Tropical coastline.

An old installation making a come back

Introduced by Almuñecar Town Hall in 2021 through its Tourism and Beaches Department, the showers were designed to provide a practical service while bringing a different look to the local area’s beaches. Each unit resembles an upright surfboard, features a different colour and displays the branding “Playas Almuñecar-La Herradura”.

Designed to be more than a beach shower

Installation began on La Herradura beach before extending to San Cristobal, Puerta del Mar and Tesorillo. Each unit also incorporated a footbath, giving beachgoers a place to rinse off after time on the sand. Daniel Barbero, then Councillor for Tourism and Beaches, said the project aimed to offer “a better service” while giving the beaches “a colourful and different touch”. Council statements at the time also indicated that the showers were intended to become an attractive feature of the coastline rather than simply another piece of beach infrastructure.

Officials further suggested the installations could become popular subjects for photographs shared online, helping promote the destination through images carrying the name Almuñécar-La Herradura.

Where can they be found?

Surfboard showers are currently located at six beaches across the area, Tesorillo, Velilla, Puerta del Mar, San Cristobal, Cotobro and La Herradura with their bright colours and unusual styling making them easy to spot.

Gaining fresh attention years after installation

Fresh interest in the showers comes more than four years after they first appeared on local beaches now that social media sharing is at an all time high. Photographs and videos shared by visitors now draw new attention to the colourful structures. What began as a local beach improvement project in 2021 has developed into a recognisable visual feature of Almuñecar and La Herradura, continuing to catch the eye of visitors long after its installation.
