Tenerife South Airport’s biggest overhaul to date aims to make flying easier for millions of travellers

Tenerife draws more than 7 million visitors tourists a year, searching for the year round sunshine, beaches, culture, food and lots more, which is why changes at Tenerife South Airport will be a welcome upgrade.

What exactly is changing

Aena has started the tender process for a complete remodelling of the terminal area, with the project now split into 57 sub-phases and work due to begin in autumn 2027. The first stage will focus on reorganising the car park, followed by the new terminal spaces, baggage areas and the rest of the passenger building. Latest official reporting puts the Tenerife South investment at more than a whopping €550 million, with the wider plan covering a redesign of the terminal area, new technologies and a rebuilt layout that links better with the surroundings. Aena says the terminal surface will grow by almost 50%.

What flyers should notice

Travel is expected to become much more straightforward once the work is complete. Aena says the redesign will bring a new check-in area, a centralised baggage reclaim hall, upgraded security and passport controls, and a new boarding space that should help passengers move through the airport more smoothly. Tenerife South handles a huge share of the island’s holiday traffic, especially flights to and from the UK and package holiday passengers. More space and a better layout design to reduce congestion at busy times is good news for families, older passengers and anyone who has had one of those slow airport days before or after a week in the sun.

What happens next

Nothing changes for travellers right away, but once the work starts in 2027, some temporary disruption is expected during construction and access roads. Aena says the rebuild is being phased specifically to keep the airport operating throughout, so flights should continue while the work goes on. There is also an eye on the future. The new layout is being planned with room for a possible connection to the long-discussed South Train project, which would give the airport an even stronger transport link.
